East Lynne Theater Company and Cape May Film Society Present the Original DRACULA Tonight, 10/14

Tonight, October 14 at 8:00p.m., East Lynne Theater Company and The Cape May Film Society are proud to present the 1922 silent film cult classic, “Nosferatu,” at The First Presbyterian Church, 500 Hughes St., Cape May, where ELTC is in residence.
Hutter, a real estate agent from Bremen, Germany visits Count Orlok at his remote castle in the Carphathian Mountains because the count wishes to buy a house in town – “a deserted one.” On his way to the castle, Hutter visits an inn, where all of the customers fall silent when he mentions Orlok’s name. Outside, horses bolt and run, and a hyena snarls before slinking away. He laughs off all the signs of gloom and doom, until, while dining with the count, he cuts himself with a bread knife and the count comments, “Blood – your beautiful blood!’
The full title of the film, “Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror,” lives up to its name. Max Schreck, who portrays the count, behaves more like an animal than a human being, with ears like bats, claw-like nails, and fangs that are in the middle of his mouth like a rodent’s. Special effects add to the uneasy atmosphere: the disappearance of a coach, the count materializing out of thin air, and photographic negatives used to give the appearance of white trees against a black sky.
In spite of the film’s director, F. W. Murnau, changing the characters’ names, it is obvious that he’s telling the tale of “Dracula” created by Bram Stoker. Stoker’s widow went to court, demanding in vain, that the film be destroyed. Ironically, Murnau might have been the making of Stoker because “Nosferatu’ inspired dozens of other “Dracula” films, none of them, according to many critics, quite as artistic or unforgettable, with the possible exception of Werner Herzog’s 1979 version with Klaus Kinski.
Wayne Zimmerman, who played the organ accompaniment for ELTC and the Society’s 2011 Halloween offering, “Phantom of the Opera,” was so well received, that these two Cape May not-for-profit organizations started a Silent Film Festival. “Nosferatu” is the third and final film for this year’s offerings, and Wayne is once more providing the music. He plays concerts and for silent films throughout the country, creating his own scores for every feature. Never taking a break during the film, he plays his scores from memory. It is rare nowadays that film lovers have the opportunity to see silent films as they were meant to be shown, with live music.
Tickets for “Nosferatu” are $15 and reservations may be made by calling ELTC at 609-884-5898 or by visiting their website, www.eastlynnetheater.org.

Bruce Cohen, Nina Jacobson and Bryan Singer Co-Chair 2012 LEGACY AWARDS Tonight, 10/13

OUTFEST, the world’s leading organization dedicated to showcasing, protecting and nurturing LGBT film imagery and artistry, announced that producers Bruce Cohen (Milk) and Nina Jacobson (The Hunger Games), and director Bryan Singer (Usual Suspects, X-Men) will co-chair the 8th annual Legacy Awards. This year’s event will take place today, October 13th at the Orpheum Theatre in downtown Los Angeles.
The Legacy Awards serve as a fundraiser for the Outfest Legacy Project for LGBT Film Preservation, which is a collaboration between Outfest and the UCLA Film & Television Archive, and the only program in the world devoted to saving and preserving LGBT moving images.
The centerpiece screening at the 2012 awards will feature a special Sneak Preview screening of the Legacy Project’s most challenging restoration to date. The silent film DIFFERENT FROM THE OTHERS (ANDERS ALS DIE ANDERN), made in 1919, is arguably the earliest surviving cinematic work made explicitly about LGBT people. Directed by Richard Oswald and co-written by famed psychologist Magnus Hirschfeld, it is believed to be the only film from a group of gay-friendly movies made during Germany’s Weimar era that escaped systematic destruction by the Nazis.
Written as part of a campaign to oppose the passage of Paragraph 175, the German law outlawing homosexuality, DIFFERENT FROM THE OTHERS caused a major scandal upon release for allegedly glorifying homosexuality and endangering public order and security. The Legacy Project restoration uses a 40-minute fragment discovered in the Ukraine–– the only known film element to have survived World War II. English-language title cards and intertitles have been created and a new negative will be struck to preserve the restored film for the future.
“The restoration of DIFFERENT FROM THE OTHERS is without question our most ambitious and most important project to date,” says Kirsten Schaffer, Executive Director of Outfest. “We have an extraordinary opportunity not only preserve history, but to make history in the process. We are immensely grateful to Nina, Bruce and Bryan who have been relentless supporters of our mission.”
Outfest and the UCLA Film & Television Archive partnered in 2005 to create the Outfest Legacy Project for LGBT Film Preservation. The only program of its kind in the world, the Outfest Legacy Project is aimed at the growing crisis in lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender moving image archiving. Many of the landmark LGBT films produced over the last 30 years are already in danger of fading away; their original exhibition prints are in tatters and their negatives are in woeful storage conditions, or even lost. Celebrating its seventh anniversary, the Outfest Legacy Project is proud to have collected over 20,000 moving picture images for the collection and restored 18 films.

Museum of the Moving Image Presents an Evening with the Work of David Lynch Tonight, 10/13

Museum of the Moving Image presents an evening with the work of David Lynch, from trancendental Meditation to Eraserhead, featuring a screening of documentary Meditation, Creativity, Peace, followed by discussion, reception with donuts and coffee, and rare screening of 35mm print of cult classic Eraserhead, tonight, October 13, 2012, 5:00 p.m.–9:00 p.m.
Best known for his postmodern cinematic masterpieces like Blue Velvet, Mulholland Drive, Eraserhead, and Twin Peaks, David Lynch has also worked with music, visual art, performance, and entrepreneurship. In recent years, he has taken on an entirely new and different role, as a champion of the transformational possibilities of Transcendental Meditation. In collaboration with the David Lynch Foundation, Museum of the Moving Image presents a special screening of Lynch’s new documentary on the subject, Meditation, Creativity, Peace.
“In today’s world of fear and uncertainty, every child should have one class period a day to dive within himself and experience the field of silence—bliss—the enormous reservoir of energy and intelligence that is deep within all of us,” writes Lynch on his foundation’s website. Meditation, Creativity, Peace follows him on his two-year, 16-country tour to share how that bliss can be achieved by all people through Transcendental Meditation.
An introduction by the David Lynch Foundation’s Executive Director Bob Roth will provide valuable insight and behind the scenes detail to this amazing document of a personal journey to change the world. The screening will be followed by a reception in the Moving Image Café with donuts from The Doughnut Plant and David Lynch Signature Cup Organic Coffee. Later in the evening, guests will have the opportunity to attend a special 35mm screening Lynch’s surrealist classic, Eraserhead.
Tickets for each screening are included with Museum admission and will be available first-come, first-served on the day of the program. This program is free for Museum members (who may also reserve tickets in advance). To become a member visit http://movingimage.us/support/membership or call 718 777 6877.

Meditation, Creativity, Peace
Introduced by Bob Roth, Executive Director, David Lynch Foundation
Followed by reception in the Moving Image Café with donuts from The Doughnut Plant and David Lynch Signature Cup Organic Coffee
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 13, 5:00 P.M.
2012, 71 mins. Digital Projection. Edited by Noriko Miyakawa. ‘This is a donut. It is very sweet, and very good. But if you’ve never tasted a donut, you wouldn’t really know how sweet and how good a donut is… Transcendental Meditation is like that. Transcendental Meditation gives an experience much sweeter than the sweetness of this donut. It gives the experience of the sweetest nectar of life, pure bliss consciousness.” This fascinating documentary follows David Lynch on a 16-country tour of Europe and the Middle East to spread the word about the individual and global impact of Transcendental Meditation (TM). With equal parts wit and passion, Meditation, Creativity, Peace, shows the director’s commitment to TM as way of changing the world, starting from within. The film also offers rare insight into Lynch’s creative process, through interviews and revealing moments from the tour.
Eraserhead
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 13, 7:30 P.M.
Dir. David Lynch. 1977, 85 mins. 35mm. Courtesy of Asymmetrical Productions. With Jack Nance, Charlotte Stewart, Allen Joseph. A surrealist horror film, an urban-decay nightmare, an expressionistic mind-melt, and a pitch-black comedy, Eraserhead is David Lynch’s astonishing debut film, a nightmarish movie about a zombielike loner. Beautifully filmed in black-and-white, it is filled with astonishing sights—and sounds, from the dirge of Fats Waller organ music to the haunting sound design by Alan Splet. This is a rare chance to see this unforgettable movie in 35mm.

Armie Hammer Talks “The Lone Ranger” on “The Tonight Show”
He’s been busy shooting his role for the blockbuster hopeful film “The Lone Ranger,” but Armie Hammer freed up time to make an appearance on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” on Tuesday (October 2).
The 26-year-old Hollywood hunk looked dapper in a perfectly fitted grey suit as he took a seat next to the late night guru to dish about a range of topics including his experiences portraying the character of John Reid (aka The Lone Ranger).
While dishing about the dangers of working with trained animals during production, Armie explained that the original plan of letting “a horse bite scorpions off of his face” had to be changed.
“I showed up on set and I said ‘ok great we are gonna do the things with the scorpions right’ and Gore [the director] was like ‘I think we have to rework that…,’” the “Social Network” stud recalled, laughingly adding, “We were rehearsing with the dummy and the horse bit the dummy’s nose off.”
The Gore Verbinski directed movie follows an American spirit warrior Tonto, who recounts the untold tales that transformed John Reid, a man of the law, into a legend of justice. Also starring Johnny Depp and Tom Wilkinson, “The Lone Ranger” is set to hit theaters on July 3, 2013.

Before you feel too sorry for Leno, his salary is reportedly still in the range of $27 million a year. He also brings in estimated additional $15 million a year from other appearances.
Even with severely declining network viewership, ‘The Tonight Show with Jay Leno’ remains the top-rated late night chat show and an advertising can cow, but with an aging audience.
ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live!, and Comedy Central’s The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and The Colbert Report have siphoned off the younger crowd.
