Passes and ticket packages for the 2013 event will go on general sale on 9 November at www.sundance-london.com.

The 2013 programme will continue its 2012 focus on presenting new work by American filmmakers and music artists. Sundance Institute, which annually presents the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, U.S.A, will select the films and related programming.

The first Sundance London featured screenings of 27 films, including many European premieres, and performances by 17 musical acts. Highlights included the Royal Premiere of HARMONY: A New Way of Looking at Our World attended by HRH, The Prince of Wales; an intimate performance by Rufus and Martha Wainwright following the world premiere of Lian Lunson’s film about the music of their mother; the Opening Night event An Evening With Robert Redford And T Bone Burnett; Tricky and Martina Topley-Bird performing Maxinquaye; and screenings of 14 feature-length and eight short films from the 2012 Sundance Film Festival. Audiences were also treated to several thought-provoking panels featuring industry experts and artists discussing topical film and music issues.

Robert Redford, President & Founder of Sundance Institute, said: “Sundance was warmly welcomed to London last year, by engaged and adventurous audiences eager to take a chance on independent film, and this makes a second year all the more exciting for us.”

“The vibrant arts community in London has informed this decision as much as anything,” continued Redford. “Seeing what comes of nurturing a broader global community for new voices and varied perspectives in American independent film and music, seems a worthy 21st Century endeavour.”

Alex Hill, Chief Finance and Strategy Officer at AEG Europe said: “The O2 has long been known for hosting some of the world’s most exciting music acts and sports spectacles, and our growth into film with the hugely successful Sundance London film and music festival is a perfect complement to our current calendar. We’re thrilled to be hosting Sundance London again in 2013 and 2014, building even further on the achievements of our inaugural year.”

John Cooper, Director of the Sundance Film Festival, said: “In addition to exposing European audiences to American film and music, we will continue connecting with the UK and European filmmaking community through workshops, panels and conversations designed to create a forum for identifying commonalities of independent filmmaking as well an exchange of best practices and new ideas.”

Long Island’s 2012 Gold Coast International Film Festival Presents Jewish and Israeli Themed Program, Now thru 10/28

The Second AnnuAl Gold Coast International Film Festival presented by the Great Neck Arts Center, with the Town of North Hempstead as Founding Sponsor, will present three new films telling captivating stories with Jewish themes come to Long Island audiences before their national release to American audiences.

The hit of Sundance and the New York Jewish Film Festival, and nominated for 11 Israeli Academy Awards, RESTORATION by Israeli director Yossi Madmoni, is about a 70-year old man who hangs on with all his might to the antique restoration workshop who finds an 1882 Steinway that might be restored to help save thestore.

A full-length animation feature film for grown-ups (it has some violence and graphic images), THE RABBI’S CAT, a delightful and quirky tale set in Algeria in the 1920s about a cat who learns how to speak after swallowing the family parrot, is directed by Joann Sfar and Antoine Delesvaux. Based on Sfar’s renowned comics series with the same title, it won the best animation Cesar in France, and was a critical and popular triumph at its screening at the Museum of Modern Art in 2012.

Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Josh Aronson’s ORCHESTRA OF EXILES starts in the early 1930s when Hitler began forcing Jewish musicians out of orchestras across central Europe, unwittingly presenting aunique opportunity for Bronislaw Huberman to fulfill his dream to create the Palestine Symphony. The film is an exciting and touching story that features a high Nazi official, Goebbels; renowned conductors, Furtwangler and Toscanini; a future head of state, Chaim Weizmann; and the families of victimized Jewishmusicians who made up the ranks of orchestras across central Europe – and even the most famous Jew in the world, an amateur violinist called Albert Einstein.

The Second AnnuAl Gold Coast International Film Festival presented by the Great Neck Arts Center, with the Town of North Hempstead as Founding Sponsor, runs today, October 22 through Sunday, October 28, 2012 in Long Island’s North Shore communities of Manhasset, Roslyn, Great Neck and Port Washington.

No film festival can do it by themselves, and we are delighted that among the wonderful sponsors of the 2012 Gold Coast International Film Festival are Town of North Hempstead, Jon Kaiman, Supervisor; Nassau County, Edward Mangano, County Executive; Great Neck Arts Center; Prudential Douglas Elliman; AMC Networks; Cablevision; Clearview Cinemas; NYIT; News 12 Long Island; Newsday; Deluxe; Panavision; Katten Muchin; and J.M. Kaplan Fund.

The Gold Coast International Film Festival celebrates the rich culture, history and talent of this fabled region. The “Gold Coast” was once a haven for New York’s elite such as the Pratts, Whitneys, Roosevelts, Fricks, Guests, DuPonts, J.P. Morgan, and Otto Kahn, and today their mansions exist as museums, historic spots and party spaces (which Gold Coast makes good use of). Great Neck (the hub of the Festival) was home to many celebrities including Groucho Marx, Joan Crawford, Paulette Goddard, Charlie Chaplin, W.C. Fields, George M. Cohan and other titans of the silver screen. Most apropos, F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote his most famous work The Great Gatsby here. Today’s Gold Coast remains a confluence of culture and class. Those influences from our past combined with the artistry, storytelling and technology of today’s world, enable the Gold Coast International Film Festival to thrive and soar and present our audiences with a fantastic and accessible festival experience. Everyone’s Invited!

YOUR BEAUTY IS WORTH NOTHING, AGLAYA Win Top Awards at Antalya Film Festival

“Your Beauty is Worth Nothing,” a film about an immigrant Turkish boy who struggles with his new life in Austria won the Best Film Award in the National Competition at the 49th Antalya Golden Orange Film Festival. The winners were announced at a Closing Night Gala on October 12, 2012.

This year’s festival sent out a strong message for peace and against a possible intervention in the conflict in Syria . Many participants also spoke out for peace and tolerance and their films focused on important social issues like recognition of ethnic identities, women’s rights, child abuse, gay rights and freedom of expression.

“This film is about a Turkish-Kurdish family and it’s a film that doesn’t take sides,” said the director Huseyin Tabak , the German-born director of “Your Beauty is Worth Nothing.” “It’s on the side of humanity.” The film also won the Best Screenplay, Best Supporting Actress, Best Editing awards and a Special Jury Prize.

“We don’t want to fight with anyone. We don’t want to fight with Syria ,” said Ali Adnan Ozgur, whose film “Children of the Land,” about two children who take refuge in a village school won a Special Jury Prize.

In the International Competition, “Aglaya” a film by Hungarian director Krisztina Deak about a Romanian circus family who escape persecution in the 80s, won The Best Film Award and a Special Jury Prize.

“This is my first premiere and international festival and I’m very, very happy,” said the director of “Aglaya” who applied to Antalya right after finishing her film. “This is a wonderful festival, and the organization and the events were very good.”

The ten films in the International Competition came from Europe , Central Asia and the Middle East .

“What is most impressive is that all the National Competition films deal with really important issues for the country and the artists,” said Barbara Boyle , Associate Dean at UCLA ‘s Film Department. Boyle was the only member of the National Jury from the U.S. “For me that is the role of the artist, particularly the film artist, and it is important for audiences to deal with these issues and not be afraid.”

The festival was not without controversy. There was a public dispute within the national jury about censorship and artistic merit, and statements were made to the Turkish media during the festival.

The winners include:
The International Competition:
Best Film: “Aglaya” by Kristina Deak / Hungary
Special Jury Award: “Keep Smiling” by Rusudan Chkonia/ France
Best Performance: Marian Dziedziel for “Supermarket”/ Poland
The National Competition:
Best Film: “Your Beauty is Worth Nothing” by Huseyin Tabak .
Special Jury Award: “Children of the Land” by Ali Adnan Ozgur .
Best First Film and Best Director: “Zerre” by Erdem Tepegoz.
Best Actress: Anna Andrusenko in “Farewell Katya” by Ahmet Sonmez
Best Actor: Abdulkadir Tuncer in “Your Beauty is Worth Nothing” by Huseyin Tabak

Stouthearted Films Opens World Premiere of PUTZEL at Woodstock Film Festival Today, 10/13

Stouthearted-Films-Announces-World-Premiere-of-PUTZEL-20121002

Stouthearted Films has announced the world premiere of PUTZEL, an indie comedy starring Jack T. Carpenter (I LOVE YOU BETH COOPER, Sydney White) in a breakout role and — following her stellar performance in HELLO I MUST BE GOING — the incomparable Melanie Lynskey (WIN WIN, UP IN THE AIR, THE PERKS OF BEING A WALLFLOWER). PUTZEL is directed by Jason Chaet (Creative Consultant KISSING JESSICA STEIN) and will have its world premiere today, October 13 at the 2012 Woodstock Film Festival.

As a contemporary fable, PUTZEL explores what happens when you step beyond the boundaries of a comfortable life and risk who you are for who you could become… And answers that eternal question: What is a PUTZEL?

In this bittersweet romantic comedy, Carpenter plays Walter Himmelstein, aka Putzel, the heir to a famous New York City smoked-fish emporium (think lox, nova, bagels). Walter grew up in the family store and is content to never leave his Upper West Side neighborhood. He thinks he knows what he wants in life — until he meets Sally (Lynskey).

PUTZEL features an amazing ensemble cast. Joining Carpenter and Lynskey is Susie Essman (CURB YOUR ENTHUSIAM; Williamstown Theater Festival’s Last of the Red Hot Lovers) in a role sure to surprise and enchant audiences, as well as a solid roster of scene-stealers: John Pankow (EPISODES, MAD ABOUT YOU, MORNING GLORY; Broadway: Amadeus, Cymbeline, Twelve Angry Men, Iceman Cometh), Fran Kranz (THE CABIN IN THE WOODS; Broadway: Death of a Salesman), AdrIan Martinez (EXTREMELY LOUD & INCREDIBLY CLOSE, KICK-ASS; Theater: Last Days of Judas Iscariot, Our Lady of 121st Street), Armando Riesco (GARDEN STATE, WORLD TRADE CENTER, National Treasure; Theater: The Pulitzer Prize Winning Water by the Spoonful at Hartford Stage), and Fred Berman (Broadway: The Lion King).

PUTZEL is executive produced by Mary Jane Skalski (HELLO I MUST BE GOING, WIN WIN, THE STATION AGENT, THE VISITOR) and Jonathan Gray (HELLO I MUST BE GOING, THE ART OF GETTING BY). “Putzel is a small town story, set in the heart of New York City — it’s equal parts funny, charming, and poignant. I’m incredibly excited about being involved. It’s a little movie with a ton of heart,” says Mary Jane Skalski.

After selling-out advance tickets to today’s October 13th screening in Woodstock, the PUTZEL world premiere has been moved to a larger venue. It will now screen at 7pm on October 13th at the Woodstock Playhouse, in Woodstock, New York. As part of the Woodstock Film Festival, PUTZEL will also screen on October 14th, at 12:15pm, at the Rosendale Theater in Rosendale, New York.
