Polarity/1: a Voice for Today’s America — a Review of Music From the Documentary ‘in Debt We Trust’

without comments

American artists have always felt free to speak their minds, even when their opinions touch on controversial topics. During the Vietnam War, the politically-conscious Edwin Starr sung out, “War, what is it good for?” to protest America’s place in the bloody battle. And leading up the 2004 presidential election, Green Day recorded ‘American Idiot,’ an entire album devoted to the dissatisfaction with George W. Bush’s presidency, and subsequently, the ever-changing America. Today, Polarity/1 is no exception. Polarity/1, a multi-instrumentalist/arranger/composer/producer, was one of the early voices warning of the impending debt crisis, having composed most of the score and served as Music Supervisor for Danny Schechter’s feature-length documentary ‘In Debt We Trust’. Focused on America’s dangerous addiction to debt and the predatory nature of our credit and loan industry, the film predicted over two years ago the economic meltdown being experienced today.Proudly speaking his mind through his music, Polarity/1 uses freedom of speech to express his opinions on America with five songs featured in the documentary. The music — “Free Money,” “Charge It,” “Winter In America (Chills To The Bone),” “I’m So Broke,” and “Free Money Blues” — touches on topics ranging from poverty, to homelessness, to drug abuse, all the while allowing his bold statements to shine through the various sounds of each track. In traditional twangy blues style, complete with a woeful chorus of melancholy men, “Free Money Blues” tells the financial burdens of the average American. Listing off dream items like flat screen TVs and new video games, the track reveals the pain of Americans, stuck in an economy where the rich keep getting richer and the poor keep getting poorer. In Polarity/1’s strained voice, listeners can feel the frustration at life in America, where money is abundant, but among all people, somehow the dollars don’t add up right. On the rock track “I’m So Broke,” Polarity/1 continues to wail about finances, forcing every listener to understand how it feels to have nothing in such a wealthy country. Commenting on the homelessness problem, he says: “What’s left in my pocket goes to keep me off the docket.” Screaming “I’m so broke” over and over, listeners are left to think about the current state of America, as they must try to find solutions that will balance out the distribution of wealth in the country.Taking a turn to rap, “Winter in America” also deals with the issue of homelessness, though this time taking a more drastic approach as it describes the brutally cold weather that they must endure. Once again proving the seriousness of the situation, Polarity/1 introduces the problem of drug addiction facing poor young people, suggesting that the country is to blame, and not parents: “You tried to raise ‘em right, but before you know, they’ll be suckin’ on a crack pipe.”Through all five tracks, Polarity/1 continues to reflect on the crucial issues facing Americans today, as those in poverty keep struggling to survive, while the government does little to help out. With such political music, it’s obvious that Polarity/1 is doing his part to change the face of America. And by listening to the music of “In Debt We Trust,” we are also invited to do the same. Enjoying the songs and its message is only the beginning, though. In a country where debt is quickly becoming the only thing we can trust, Polarity/1’s album functions as the ultimate personal question: What are you going to do to fix America? All five songs are available for free download at http://www.reverbnation.com/polarity1

10 Ways Beach Music, Romance & Self-expression Created the First ‘myspace’

without comments

by John Hook

Beach Music? Many define it by its geography and the kinds of songs it includes while describing ‘friendship’ and ‘good times’ as the glue which binds it. If you’re like me you’ve thrilled to square dancing in bright costumes, two-stepping in country bars, bumping and hustling in discos, and line dancing in modern clubs. They’re all filled with friendship and good times; making those insufficient illustrations of what makes Beach Music what it is.

1. Beach Music in the East and the West are similar, but not the same. Both coastal communities celebrate individuality and self-expression. At the center of West Coast beach culture is the surfer community encouraging private quests marked by athletic achievement while the East Coast dance culture inspires a new form of social success.

2. East Coast Beach Music nurtures new ideals of social equality, romance, and improvisational self-expression. Fifteen years before Rock and Roll, white teenagers in the Southeast embraced Black music as their own. At the same time they developed a new dance to express themselves. From that mixture the Shag evolved.

3.  Many found the secret rites of Shag and Beach Music at the Beach. Like the “soul surfers” of the West Coast, the “soul dancers” set new standards for the ‘good life.’ At the beach, personal and hometown histories stayed home while they assumed nicknames and developed new personalities.

4. Rhythm and Blues and Jazz were foundations for the Shag. In addition to early black music, soul dancers often flipped over national pop hits to see if the ‘B’ side had the right beat and mood for carefree shuffles in coastal and inland pavilions.

5. Society sometimes misread them as mere ‘rebels.’ Like their West coast alter-egos they weren’t rebelling as much as forming new communities and social hierarchies of greater equality with rights of self-expression.

6. Balmy days and nights, sensual Shag moves, and their own ‘coat of arms’ embraced giddy summer romances. The Shaggers’ dress code included Bass Weejuns, no socks, cashmere sweaters, and madras shirts. Like knights of old, girl-partners were revered.  When they danced, *she* was the most gorgeous woman in the world.

7. East Coast soul dancers enshrined the Art of Play as equal to Hard Work. As such they considered social life equivalent to work life. While they worked summer jobs to support themselves, they worked just as hard at “not working” on the dance floor.

8. It looked like a sexual revolution. It really wasn’t focused on sex. Self-confidence and cool were guiding principles and the ’safe date’ was integral to Beach Music. They put dancing before drinking–unlike some who need a ‘boost’ to drop their inhibitions.

9. Classic Beach songs include national hits and treasures unknown outside the Southeast. Fifties Beach songs celebrated the good times in several ways. Although “Drinkin’ Wine Spo Dee O Dee” mentioned wine, it more loudly proclaimed the ‘good times’! Fifties hits included “Good Rockin’ Tonight,” “Sixty Minute Man,” and “Sh-Boom.” The 60s added hundreds more like “Under the Boardwalk,” “My Girl,” “What Does it Take To Win Your Love,” and “Brown Eyed Girl.”

10. The ‘Shag’ had other names including the ‘Bop’ ‘Freestylin” and ‘Fas’ Dancin’. The music wasn’t named for 25 years! In the beginning most teenagers found it at the Beach. Eventually there were 500+ inland dance clubs, Pavilions, restaurants, swimming pools, and fishing lakes with dance floors.

Beach Music and Shag history show a culture celebrating individual uniqueness in the rituals of music and romance experienced by those who were dancing to their own destinies.  The Beach Music community was like a ‘beta’ version of MySpace, a ‘flat’ world where everyone was equal, each member was in charge of their own self-expression and the accumulation of friends with whom they had common interests.  The internet has simply made the field of dance partners much much larger.

“Fessa” John Hook is a 39 year broadcaster captains the Endless Summer Network of Beach and Shag music on the net.His three books on Beach music and Shag  are: “Shaggin’ in the Carolinas,” and the “Beach Music Guide 1945-2006, Vols 1 & 2″ and another, “Dancing On the Edge – How Music Freed the South,” coming in the fall of 2009.”‘Shagging In the Carolinas,’ according to Hook, a Beach Music and Shag enthusiast, is a love letter that took 26 years to write.” –Sun Times newspaper

“Hook writes about how Shagging defied social conventions as carefree white teenagers were inspired by the possibilities inherent in improvisational black dance and music.” –Lexington Dispatch”Hook knows what he’s talking about when it comes to Beach Music. As a broadcaster in the late 1980s, he was responsible for the first full-time Beach Music radio station in history….he chronicles the evolution of the dance….before the Lindy Hop, before the Jitterbug, came the Shag, a dance born and bred in the Carolinas.” –Our State magazine

Can You Really Make Money Selling New Release Cd’s & Dvd’s on Ebay?

without comments

Being an active eBayer, I am often being asked about products to sell. A common question is “Where can I purchase products such as new release CD’s DVD’s and Video Games for Play station and X box at a 75% to 100% discount. Well folks, this sort of discount on this type of merchandise are not available from Wholesalers or Dropshippers. The reason being, the competitive nature of the electronics industry, and simple supply and demand.

Still with the tremendous popularity of these products and their ease to package and ship, people want to sell them. So where can you find these products at a great price? Liquidators! Yes that’s right, Liquidators! What exactly are Liquidators? You Ask. Well, as explained in my book “eBay Marketing Wholesale SourcePak” a Liquidator is a company who buys surplus, over runs, bankruptcies, and going out of business inventory etc. They purchase this merchandise for pennies on the dollar and in turn pass this saving on to you. There are many Liquidators who would have just what you are looking for.

There are General Merchandise Liquidators who basically purchase and sell all sorts of general merchandise. And, there are Liquidators who specialize and only purchase and sell merchandise in a specific niche – say electronics.

An Electronics Liquidator would purchase products from music stores or department stores with an electronics dept or movie rental stores or electronic stores that are going out of business, declaring bankruptcy or who have overstock. From that inventory they would have some of the latest CD’s, DVD’s and Video Games.

Liquidators are similar to Wholesalers and Dropshippers in that you will have to become a member to have access to their inventory. Most require no fee to become a member, while others may charge a nominal fee. However, Liquidators have a set number of units you must buy in order to get a great price. A Liquidator will purchase inventory in bulk and therefore will want to sell the merchandise in cases or lots.

So, Yes You can make Good Money Selling New Release CD’s, DVD’s and, Video Games and the likes on your eBay auction by choosing the proper supplier. And remember that selling on eBay is all about research.

You must research the product you are interested in selling. What is the best price for the item? What is the best selling price you can get for that item? Also, research that item’s market to see just how many people are selling this product.

Knock Down Writer’s Block!

without comments

Do you regularly find yourself writing a collection of articles? In all honesty, it really doesn’t matter if you write for a career or just for fun; writing is writing. However, no matter what your reason for writing, there many come a time when you are unable to do so. This is most often due to writer’s block. Writer’s block is a common occurrence, even among professional writers. Although it is hard to associate writer’s block with good news, there is good news. That good news is that there are a number of different approaches that you can take to get around writer’s block. Just a few of these approaches are outlined below.

Perhaps, the most effective way to get over your writer’s block is to not think about writing for a while. The amount of time that you are able to take off will depend on your deadline, if you have one. Even if you are only able to take a ten-minute break from writing, you are urged to do so. However, it has been noted that the longer the break the easier it is to overcome writers block. Depending on your own personal preferences, you could take a break and curl up with a book, wash your dirty dishes, or run a few errands. It really doesn’t matter, as long as you can take a break. When you have spent a few minutes or a few hours away from the pressures of writing, you are more likely to overcome your writer’s block; thus making it easier for you to concentrate and write.

In addition to taking a break, you can also continue working; however, you may want to think about changing the way that you are working, even if it is only temporarily. For instance, when you write do you have to be surrounded by peace and quiet or do you like a little background noise? If you prefer quiet, you may want to think about turning your television on in the background. In fact, you may even want to think about putting in your favorite music CD and putting on a pair of headphones. Many writers find it inspiring to listen to their favorite music groups or songs. If you prefer to work with background noise, it may be a good idea to give peace and quiet a try. Some times, the best way to overcome writers block to change the way that you are writing.

Speaking of the way that you work, how exactly do you work? Better yet, where do you work? Do you sit at a desktop computer? Although desktop computers are nice, they may be limiting your abilities. Whether you have your own office or if you are just working for a desktop computer setup in your living room, you may need a change. This change is best implemented if you can purchase a laptop computer. Laptop computers allow you to move, virtually anywhere; you can work in you living room, or on your bed, or even outside at a picnic table. In fact, you are urged to find a surrounding that inspires you. Inspiration is the best way to get over writer’s block. That is why it may be best for you experiment and find which areas you are able to work in and which areas you are unable to work in.

It is unknown exactly what causes writer’s block; perhaps it is boredom or the loss of thought. No matter what the reason for writer’s block, it is something that many writers experience. The above mentioned approaches are just a few of the many that you can take to overcome writers block. Writer’s block, its cause, and its cure are all unique among different writers. That is why you will need to experiment and find the approach that best helps you to overcome writer’s block. Keeping the above mentioned points in mind will help.

Jumping Genres Once Again, and Still Shocking Us All: a Review of Polarity/1’s ‘music From the Other Side’

without comments

Polarity/1, the multi-genre artist best known for bold, honest, hard-hitting songs, has released a brand new instrumental record titled ‘Music From the Other Side’. The new CD continues the opinion-filled musical legacy of Polar: fitting to the title, the album consists of smooth, jazzy tracks much different from louder albums like ‘Yankin’ The Food Chain’. Proving that this album is no less diverse than his others, Polar once again shows his ability to spread his talent over a wide variety of genres; his music has been incorporated by dance theaters and documentarists, including Danny Schechter’s feature-length film documentary ‘In Debt We Trust’ and Battery Dance Company’s 26th Annual Downtown Dance Festival last year.’Music From The Other Side’ is the soundtrack for a dance performance by Lisbon’s Quorum Ballet, fusing the style and art of the dance of Lisbon and New York. A collaboration of choreographers Daniel Cardoso, Jonathan Hollander and Thaddeus Davis, artistic directors of Quorum Ballet, Battery Dance Company and Wideman/Davis Dance, respectively, this dark, moody, erotic and aggressive album explores the theme of oppression, which has always been an issue for the people on both sides of the Atlantic. The thought-provoking record examines the roles of the many different characters in life, including the instigator, the oppressor, the oppressed and the observer. The most impressive song on the album is the vocal version of “Fulano de Tal,” which is included as a bonus track. Also noteworthy is the exotic, media-infused sound of “Land O Debbies.” The entire albums feels like the fusion of every type of media coming together to blend spooky, unique melodies that echo through every track. What really drives the record, though, is the steady, trance-like beat that is impossible to ignore. As with all of his albums, on ‘Music From the Other Side’ Polarity/1 proves his ability to keep listeners engaged for every song, as they are never quite sure of what to expect next. Just as his name suggests, Polarity/1’s music certainly is composed of “conjoined opposites”; jumping from instrumentals to upbeat drumming, and from rapping to slow, soulful lyrics, Polarity/1 truly is 1 of a kind.http://www.polarity1.comhttp://www.myspace.com/polarity1music

Desperate Housewives Actress Says ‘i Do’ Twice

without comments

After months of media coverage and publicity, the much talked about union of NBA star, Tony Parker and Desperate Housewives actress, Eva Longoria, finally took place twice in beautiful Paris. The 6’2” Parker wed the diminutive Longoria in a civil ceremony last Friday, before their church wedding the following day.

Their civil wedding was held in accordance with French laws and was officiated by Paris Mayor Betrand Delanoe. The ceremony was witnessed by less than 30 family and friends at the city hall.

In stark contrast, over 200 guests were in attendance the following day, when the celebrity couple exchanged vows and ‘I Dos’ at the Eglise Saint-Germain l’Auxerrois Church across the famed Louvre Museum.

Among the guests were superstar crooner, Sheyl Crow, Fantastic Four star, Jessica Alba, American Idol’s Ryan Seacrest and Parker’s San Antonio Spurs coach, Greg Popovich. As expected, Eva Longoria’s Desperate Housewives cast mates were also there to watch their fellow ‘housewife’ walk down the aisle. Teri Hatcher came with her nine-year old daughter, Felicity Huffman arrived with actor hubby, William H. Macy and Nicolette Sheridan attended alone while Marcia Cross was understandably absent in light of the recent birth of her twins.

After the Roman Catholic nuptials, guests traveled 40 miles to the Vaux-le-Vicomte castle in Maincy for the reception. The 17th century chateau, located 35 miles southeast of Paris, provided a stunning venue with its marble-floored ballroom, chandelier-studded dining room and 70 acres of precisely pruned and meticulously manicured gardens, all basking in the glow of 4,000 candles. The lavish celebration cost more than half a million and was complete with music, dancing and fireworks well into midnight.

The marriage is Eva Longoria’s second, after her two-year union with General Hospital actor, Tyler Christopher, ended in divorce in 2004. She will soon rejoin the rest of the Desperate Housewives ensemble when they begin filming the fourth season due to begin in September.
